SAMPLE LESSON PLAN (LISTENING)

Number of Learners: 24

Age of Learners: 16

Level of Learners: Intermediate

Estimated Duration of the Presentation: 25’

Skills: Listening, reading, speaking and writing

Materials: Handouts, pictures, role cards

Objectives:
To improve learners’ listening skill in pointing out main idea.
To identify the specific points of information.
To improve learners’ listening skill for specific information.

Performance Objectives: By the end of the lesson, learners will have listened for general understanding and comprehension, which will help them to improve their listening skills.

A. PRE-LISTENING ACTIVITY


Aims:
To prepare the learners to the lesson.
To interest the learners into the topic.
To make learners be ready for the topic.
To activate the learners’ schemata.

What the teacher does: The teacher introduce the class the lesson’ topic by talking about daily life and pictures on the board and asks them some questions about pictures like;
- What do you see in these pictures?
- What do you think about the topic?

What the learners do: Learners answer the questions and comment on the pictures.

Materials: Pictures

Timing: 5’

B. WHILE-LISTENING ACTIVITIES


1) First Listening Activity
Aim: To make the learners to get the main idea.

What the teacher does: The teacher gives handouts to the learners. Firstly, he asks them to have a look at the first question in section A on the handouts. Then, he asks them to listen to the conversation and answer the first question in section A.

What the learners do: The learners answer the first question in section A after listening to the conversation.

Skills:  Listening for the main idea

Materials: Handouts

Timing: 2’

2) Second Listening Activity

Aim: To get the learners understand the listening conversation in general.

What the teacher does: The teacher asks the learners to have a look at the rest of the questions in section A on the handouts. Then, he asks them to listen to the conversation and answer the questions. After listening to the conversation, the teacher checks their answers.

What the learners do: The learners answer the rest of the questions after listening to the conversation.

Skills:  Listening for understanding in general

Materials: Handouts

Timing: 3’

3) Third Listening Activity

Aim:
To get the learners more specific information.
To get the learners understand the conversation in detail.

What the teacher does: Firstly, the teacher asks the learners to have a look at the activity B on the handouts. Then, the teacher asks the learners listen to the conversation again and write the missing words in the text. After completing the text, the teacher checks the answers.

What the learners do: The learners write the missing words after listening to the conversation.

Materials: Handouts

4) Vocabulary  Activity

Aim: To make the learners read the text and provide contextual guessing.

What the teacher does: Firstly, the teacher asks the learners to have a look at the activity C and D on the handouts. Then, the teacher asks the learners read the text again to guess the meaning of the words written in bold and try to complete the sentences with an appropriate word. After completing the sentences, the teacher checks the answers.

What the learners do: The learners read the text again to guess the meaning of the words written in bold and complete the sentences with an appropriate word.

C. POST LISTENING ACTIVITY

Aim:
To make learners discuss the topic.
To encourage learners to use authentic language.
To encourage them to improve their speaking skills.

What the teacher does: The teacher hands out a role-card for each pair. There are some situations written on the cards to give information about the context. The teacher explains the steps one by one and says “each pair has a topic written on card and you will write a couple of things about the context that given, then you will act out in front of the class.”

What the learners do: The learners do role-play.

Follow-up Activity: After the learners’ act out, the teacher says that “for the next lesson, you will make a search about any kind of emergency call conversations. Then, you will share them with your friends in the next lesson.”
